Discharger RB - spark gap is designed to protect communication lines, antenna devices, circuits and devices from lightning discharges and other types of short-term overvoltage.
Arresters RB belong to ionic devices using a spark discharge.
The spark gap container is filled with an inert gas (usually krypton).
When normal voltages not exceeding the rated voltages operate in the protected circuit, the quiet discharge mode is set in the arrester. The resistance of the arrester under these conditions is so high that its inclusion in the line or circuit practically does not affect their operation.
When the voltage exceeds the permissible, a spark discharge is formed in the RB arrester, its resistance drops sharply, the arrester, as it were, short-circuits the line, protecting the equipment connected to this line from overloads. In this case, a large current flows through the spark gap, and the voltage across its electrodes decreases.
If the power of the overvoltage source is high, then the spark discharge turns into an arc discharge, if this power is low, then with a decrease in the discharge current, the device will switch to the quiet discharge mode, since at the gas pressure existing in it, there is neither spark nor glow discharges at normal voltage on the electrodes are not saved.
